Moritz Rugendas (1802-1858) traveled extensively throughout Brazil on two extended expeditions. A trained painter, these lithographed examples of his art are considered important documentation in the study of Brazilian life at the beginning of the nineteenth century. This remarkable work was published in German and French. A number of slaves are shown. Two women and a child are kneeling before the master who appears to whip one. Rare.
