Author was the French minister to the United States from 1829-31, and this work represents a first-hand view of the U.S. It was commissioned as part of a major series by Didot to document various countries in the world. Richly illustrated with engravings, some copied from earlier sources (such as De Bry), and many other scenes of buildings, landscapes and people. Folding map, Éstats-Unis, (9 x 7") B/W, tipped in at front. Hardbound, quarter leather and marble paper covers, gold embossed lettering on spine. 8vo. French text, 400 pp. + 96 copperplate engravings and index. Later printing, first issued in 1837.
