A very fine full length portrait Henry Clay, one of the most influential congressmen of the early 1800s, with a political career that spanned nearly fifty years. He is shown here in his library signing the Compromise of 1850, of which he was the principal author. This fine mezzotint portrait was engraved by the prominent artist John Sartain, printed by J. Irwin, Philadelphia and published by U.B. Evarts, Louisville , KY.
