This very uncommon and interesting small map of the southern tip of Africa was published in Commelin's famous collections of travels to illustrate the earliest voyage of the Dutch to the East Indies in 1595. The cartographer of the map is unknown. The map includes the coastal names introduced by the earliest Portuguese explorers and the interior is filled with large cities. Includes a large inset of De Baij Van A. de S. Bras (present-day Mossel Bay) and an inset coastal view of the Cape of Good Hope. The map is decorated with a large compass rose, sailing ship, sea gulls and two drawings of seaweed.
