Weld, an Irish-born topographer, arrived to Philadelphia in 1795, and his subsequent travels took him through the mid-Atlantic states where he met George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. He then continued to Montreal and Quebec and, following the St. Lawrence River, journeyed to the lakes of Kingston, Niagara and Detroit. His views of the country and its settlements are often unflattering, but provides a fascinating early view of the emerging nation. Volume I contains a folding map [Part of the United States of North America], plans of the Cities of Washington and Quebec, a map of Upper & Lower Canada, engravings of an American Stage Waggon and a Canadian Calash, Views of Mount Vernon, Rock Bridge, Cohoz Fall and Cape Diamond. Volume II has a several views of Niagara and a View of Bethlehem. Fourth edition in two volumes, 802 pp., 16 plates. Both volumes have been beautifully rebound with brown leather, embossed and gilt on spine. A beautiful and complete matched set.
