Handsome and uncommon map of Asia extending to include Japan, the Philippines and the East Indies. George Louis le Rouge (fl. 1740-80) was one of the great French cartographers, rising to become the Geographer to the King. He was a military engineer prior to his career as a cartographer and his map reflect the scientific approach that distinguish French mapmaking. This map, based on the latest astronomical observations from the academy in Moscow clearly shows rivers, mountains, lakes, countries, and cities with significant accuracy. Along the left is a panel providing the divisions of Asia, both political and religious. The fine title cartouche incorporates a richly laden camel.
