This important atlas contains fascinating information and charts illustrating the wealth of the nation and state of our society based on the census of 1870. The colorful lithographed thematic maps were made using state-of-the art shading and hachures to show up to five degrees of change. Includes Hitchcock and Blake's important Geological Map, and interesting maps on the Density of Foreign Population, Colored Population and Occupations of the People, to name just a few. There are 10 maps on Physical Features and 7 on so-called Vital Statistics giving birth rates, age and sex of the living population, deaths by age and sex, etc. Large folio in library loose-leaf portfolio covers. Title page, index, 51 pages of text and 52 (of 54) lithographed plates containing maps and charts, some colored. Missing plates III & IV (Woodlands). Printed by Julius Bien.
