First is the interesting title page (7.2 x 11.2") for Jan Nieuhoff's important chronicle of the first embassy to China by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). The engraving shows the emperor seated on his throne with his arm resting on a large globe. He is surrounded by his generals with prisoners prostrated on the ground before him. Second is a portrait (7.2 x 10.5") of Jean Baptiste Colbert, statesman, finance minister of Louis XIV and promoter of cartography in France. Nieuhoff's book was dedicated to Colbert. Published by Jacob Meurs.
