A decorative 19th century map of the continent colored to show the colonial possessions and major tribal kingdoms. The interior has limited information as compared to the coastal area. The map is surrounded by steel-engraved scenes including the pyramids, wild animals, natives, the French army in Algeria and vignettes of Alexandria, Cairo, and Alger. A lovely, early edition by Levasseur with beautifully hand colored vignettes.

Beautiful impression and coloring with full margins. One tiny spot in blank area of vignette, still fine. Later, well done, hand coloring on vignettes.
