Maund was a pharmacist, botanist and bookseller who was most noted as the publisher of several botanical periodicals with beautifully colored plates. This group of delicate engravings, each depicting four species, is from one of his now scarce gardener's guidebooks. The plates are not merely pretty plates; they are presented in a scientific manner with a small portion of each image left uncolored so that the viewer could examine leaf and flower structures. This group includes tulips, primroses, lilies, crocus, dianthus, and many other perennial favorites.
