First (uncolored, 8.2 x 5.4") is a delightful little map of the Garden of Eden by Philipp Cluver, circa 1711. North is oriented to the left and Eden is shown to be in the region of present-day Iraq. The title cartouche is flanked by Adam and Eve and there are depictions of the temptation and expulsion on the map. Second (original color, 15.6 x 12.2") is a handsome map of the region of present-day Syria and Iraq from Christopher Weigel's Historiarum Orientalis Quinti….., circa 1720. The map is boldly engraved to show all the major ancient sites in the region including fortresses and battlefields. Inset at left is a map of the Garden of Eden next to the large title cartouche that incorporates a scene of the building of the Tower of Babel. Various types of Roman coins are included at top left.
