First (9.5 x 10.4") is an uncolored map by J. Laurent, from l'Historie Generale des Voyages, circa 1775. It is an attractive and unusual map of the Kuriles Islands and the northern coast of Hokkaido. The map includes numerous inaccuracies and fanciful names for a number of the islands including Is. Tsitronnoi ou des Citrons (Island of Lemons) and Is. Des trois Soeurs (Islands of the Three Sisters). Decorative title cartouche in the French style with a cache of weapons. Second (7.8 x 9.8") is from a Dutch edition of Cook's Voyages, circa 1778. It shows parts of the east coast of Hanshu with a coastal profile inset above.
