This is one of the most detailed, accurate, and certainly most visually impressive, maps of New England. It covers the area from Penobscot Bay to the Hudson River and shows boundaries, towns, roads, trails, portages, forts, farms and topography. While the coastlines are not well represented, the map is remarkable for the early place names, landmarks and land grants in New Hampshire and Maine. The map was originally published by Thomas Jefferys in 1755 and was the work of his assistant Braddock Mead, alias John Green. The map had a long publishing history and was updated with subsequent editions. This is the 4th state (Pritchard & Taliaferro state 5) with Jeffery's imprint November 29th 1774 below the cartouche. The map includes two fine insets: "A Plan of the Town of Boston" and "A Plan of Boston Harbor" and a superb vignette of the Pilgrim's landing beneath the title cartouche. Engraved on four separate sheets, here partially joined to form two separate sheets, as issued.
