This unusual map is from a rare 16th century Italian atlas of the 'Lafreri-School.' The majority of maps from this atlas illustrate the Siege of Vienna in 1566 and the theatre of war in the Mediterranean between Venice and the Turkish Empire from 1570-1573. This map provides a detailed view of Greece and the Archipelago, which at the time was controlled by the Turks. The decorative title cartouche is blank. It is likely this map also appeared in other composite atlases, as was the custom during this period.
