This rare map is from a revised copper plate originally engraved by Pieter van den Keere and published in the 1628 edition of the Mercator Atlas Minor published by Jansson. It is a small version of Jansson's map of the Spice Islands, the cornerstone of the Dutch trading empire in the East Indies throughout the 17th Century. For the Atlas Soulage the title and scale were translated into French, and the cartouche and compass rose were revised. The atlas was only issued once and there is only one known complete copy extant, in the University Library of Leiden.
