Pair of Revolutionary War period sea charts printed together on an elephant folio sheet. These maps were prepared by the French Navy under Antoine Sartine, Minister of Marine, upon their entry into the war on the American side. The chart at left is based on Joshua Fisher's important map of Delaware Bay and River to just beyond Philadelphia. Navigational information in the bay is copious and the main shipping lane to Philadelphia is indicated with depths marked along it. There are extensive sailing instructions included. The chart on the right is a detailed chart of New York Harbor and vicinity. It shows navigational soundings, channels, rocks and shoals, the lighthouse at Sandy Hook, and towns on the Jersey shore. The text in the Advertissement is a French translation of a letter from the British commander, General Howe, describing an engagement with Washington in 1778 at Sandy Hook. These charts could be separated for framing. They are generally not sold together.
