In the summer of 1874 Custer was tasked with reconnoitering a route to Bear Butte and to explore the vicinity. Gold was discovered leading to a major Gold Rush and the subsequent Custer Massacre. This attractive map is color coded to reflect geological findings and was one of three maps included in Ludlow's Report. Locates numerous creeks and gives detail of timber and topography. Legend indicates eleven geological types through coloring and line.

Originally issued folding, now pressed and backed with archival tissue. Fine, bright coloring. Touch of light toning along two folds.
