This is one of the most famous maps of the Americas, and one that had enormous influence on the future cartography of the New World. This is the third state with the revised shape of South America. Other revisions include the addition of the name California on the Baja, and the Indian name Wingandekoa in the Chesapeake Bay region. The Solomon Islands are shown here for the first time since they were discovered in 1568. The strategically placed title cartouche hides the unknown South Pacific and therefore most of the conjectural great southern continent. Latin text on verso with page number 5, published circa 1609.
