Every map collector's dream - an original engraved copper plate! This plate was last used to print a map of the Mediterranean region in 1856. The imprint line at bottom attributes the map to W.J. Hamersley, 1856… The back of the plate has been hammered directly behind the date and name in the imprint line to smooth them out prior to re-engraving. Hamersley produced, often with Belknap, many cartographic works including their Modern Atlas of 1843, and Woodbridge's Geography. A rare find that is in beautiful, undamaged condition.
