A rare vellum leaf from an early printed Book of Hours from the transitional period in which printers incorporated the manuscript conventions of historiated initials and illustrations into their work. The decorations and text are printed but the initials are hand painted and illuminated with gold leaf. Simon Vostre and his partner, Pigouchet, produced some of the most spectacular Books of Hours of the late-fifteenth and early-sixteenth century. The historiated borders are particularly noteworthy, typical of the intricate and lively iron engravings created in Paris during this period.
