Very nice pair of reference books. The first is the Dover Press edition of R.V. Tooley's timeless book. This is a reprint of the 7th edition of this important standard work for any collector's library. Provides information on the principal map makers and publishers throughout the history of cartography. This edition includes a new introduction and up-to-date lists of authoritative references at the ends of chapters. 140 pp. with 104 illustrations, both black/white and colored. Hardbound in cream cloth with illustrated dust jacket. Published in 1990, 7.5 x 10 inches.
The latter is widely recognized as a standard reference work, this important book covers map making, cartographers and collecting. Against a general historical background, the methods of map making from about 1470 onwards are described in detail. Includes brief biographies of the major mapmakers and details of their principal world. Finally, it provides advice for the collector on the practical aspects of collecting and care. This third edition incorporates corrections, some revisions, and a 15 page supplement including an expanded list of American cartographers. 326 pp, biographies, chronologies, index with many maps illustrated, 8 in full color. Written by Moreland & Bannister, this is the Phaidon Press edition in soft illustrated cover, 7.5 x 9.8 inches.
