Finely engraved copper plate map of the Roman Empire. Includes Europe, Northern Africa, and the Near and Middle East. The map is embellished with ships in the Atlantic and a fine title cartouche featuring figures, ships and figurehead. The map was first published by Tavernier and later by Mariette. This is the second state of this map, which was first created in 1637 by Nicolas Sanson. This state was issued by Sanson's son, Guillaume, who added text at top right accusing French geographer Michel Antoine Baudrand of plagiarism, explaining that Baudrand had copied Sanson's map and claimed it as his own in 1669.
