The "Dance of Death" was originally a type of spectacular play performed in the Middle Ages. The epidemics so frequent and so destructive at that time, such as the Black Death, brought before popular imagination the subject of death and its universal sway. The dance of death naturally became a popular theme for the engraver and many such prints were produced by various artists. These two are from the same unknown source; plates 20 and 22.
