One of the most beautiful plate books on the United States ever produced. Forty-seven beautifully rendered and engraved steel plate views and over 500 wood engravings, many full-page. Works by Thomas Moran, Harry Fenn, Granville Perkins, F.O.C. Darley and other important American artists of the 19th century. Two volumes with matching tooled leather bindings. Hardbound, in full leather, embossed with gilt, raised bands on spine. Volume I - 568 pp., Volume II - 576 pp. Full gilt on all page edges. Missing two steel plates: Harper's Ferry, and Richmond, from the James.

Contents very good with only occasional light foxing on the odd page. Appears to have most original tissue guards over steel engravings. Covers heavily rubbed and abraded at spine and edges, warped, and front cover loose on Vol. II.
