This rarely seen map is a derivative of Melish's map with some improvements and additions. The map shows Arkansas with its pre-1828 borders that incorporate most of present-day Oklahoma. The entire central region is labeled Oregon Territory and the newly created state of Missouri is well shown. North West Territory occupies all of today's Minnesota and Wisconsin. This is the earlier state of the map that appeared with updates, circa 1838, in William Maclure's "Observations on the Geology of the United States of America."
