This interesting plan shows the siege of Gravelines in 1644 in minute detail including troop encampments and movements, fortifications, canals and the Dutch fleet in the sea. During the Thirty Years' War (1618-48) and its Franco-Spanish aftermath, Gravelines was bitterly fought over. The map is from Blaeu's town book of the Netherlands and includes a large decorative cartouche with a dedication to Jean-Baptiste Gaston, duc d'Orléans who was lieutenant-general of the kingdom at the time. Latin text on verso.
