This elegant chart of Italy extends to show the Adriatic, some of the Balkans, west to include Provence to beyond today's St. Tropez and Toulon, and well north above the Italian Alps. The area shows Corsica and Sardinia, as well as part of Sicily. It is embellished with a fine 32-point compass rose and fleur-de-lys and two spectacular cartouches featuring Neptune holding his trident and a sailing ship while riding on a shell chariot pulled by two sea horses. Cantelli pioneered this bold engraving style that was followed and further developed by Coronelli.
