Laurent Fries published a reduced version of Waldseemuller's monumental Carta Marina of 1516. It was only three-quarters as big as the Waldseemuller, but was still a very large map in twelve woodblock sheets. The map covers the known world with only partial coastlines of the New World. It is decorated with a host of interesting illustrations including exotic animals, cannibal scenes, enthroned rulers, fanciful sea monsters and is surrounded in an elaborate border of windheads and clouds. The only surviving example of the map is in the collection of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich. It is from this example that this reproduction was produced by Ludwig Rosenthal. Twelve sheets with original paper wrappers.
