This copper engraved map of the Americas depicts the first voyage of Capt. Cook around South America and across the Pacific to New Zealand, which is well charted. North America is shown with the mythical Northwest Passage and the supposed discoveries of Admiral de Fonte. This depiction of North America was based on the cartography of Robert de Vaugondy. The lovely title cartouche portrays a sleeping lion.
