This huge linen backed chart was "Compiled from the latest surveys by George Eldridge, Hydrographer." The finely detailed and boldly engraved chart extends from Norfolk north to include Baltimore, along tributary rivers to Richmond, Fredericksburg, Washington, D.C., White Haven, Vienna, and Nottingham on the Patuxent River. The legend and tables locate buoys, rocks, shoals, type of bottom, fog bells, light houses, and more. Dotted lines on the chart give sailors the distance and sailing directions between ports and numerous buoys or other intersections; it is filled with hundreds of soundings. Notations discuss various buoys, their meaning and how to approach the navigational types as defined in the Act of 1850. On verso are the three original paper labels giving title, list of other charts for sale with pricing, and one showing medals won by Eldridge's Charts at the Massachusetts Mechanics Fair, 1881.

Nice example with a little foxing at bottom, slight paper loss near Smith's Point, and some staining at upper left margin. A little roughness at edge upper right, tear into map at top, else very good.
