This unusual map is from a rare 16th century Italian atlas of island maps. It provides a delightful view of the important Mediterranean island of Elba with graphic depictions of the topography, cities, churches and the fortification of Cosmopoli (Portoferraio). Several ships are shown in the harbor and the Etruscan coast with Piombino is shown at top. Camocio was on of the member of the so-called 'Lafreri-school' of Italian map-makers, active in the latter part of the sixteenth century.
