This plan of the great Chinese city was made during the period following the Opium Wars. At the heart of the city is the Imperial Palace and Imperial City (Forbidden City), surrounded by the Tartar City, which includes the foreign enclaves. To the south is the Chinese City with the temples Tien-tan (Altar of Heaven) and Sheng-neng-tan (Altar to the inventor of Agriculture). The city walls and gates are well depicted.
