This striking title page depicts mythological figures and angels aboard a ship during a storm. Jaillot, originally a sculptor, became interested in geography after his marriage to the daughter of Nicolas Berey, a famous map colorist. He went into partnership with Sanson's sons and undertook the re-engraving, enlarging and re-publishing of Sanson maps in an effort to fill the gap in the map trade left by the destruction of Blaeu's printing establishment in 1672. He was named Geographe Ordinaire du Roi in 1678. This is from a later edition (first edition was published in 1694) with the new title printed from a separate, irregularly shaped copper plate.
