This is a handsome sheet featuring the exotic people and animals observed during John Nieuhoff's travels. There are elephants, monkeys, lions, and a couple of less identifiable animals. John (Jan) Nieuhoff (1618-1672) traveled in Brazil, the East Indies and China, and lost his life while on an expedition between Mozambique and Madagascar. His account of China was of enormous value in the dissemination of the knowledge about China throughout Europe in the late 17th century.
