This scarce map is the first sea chart of the North Atlantic to depict the waters approaching Hudson Strait. It is an important chart that is from the first sea atlas to print all maps on Mercator's Projection, the first to show winds, currents and magnetic deviation on its maps, and the first atlas of sea charts by an Englishman. The cartography is based on Gerritz' map of 1612. Estotiland represents Baffin Island, and the mythical island of Frisland is noted, complete with settlements and towns. Dudley, a skilled mathematician and navigator, was exiled from England and settled in Florence where his atlas was published. The chart is beautifully engraved by Antonio Lucini and embellished with a title cartouche, large compass rose and a sailing ship. Printed on two joined sheets, as issued.

Exquisitely sharp impression. There is some toning along the joint and a couple of spots of foxing.
