In this letter from J.H. Colton dated Aug. 25, 1849, he responds to a request for a map of Minnesota. The address leaf has postal markings, a circular New-York hand stamp and a manuscript 20 [cent] rate. Colton says "There is no map of Minnesota that I am aware of except that connected with other States. My large U.S. shows it as well as anything. The Western States has most of it and probably all that you [need -?] and I believe it is as good as anything that can be gotten. Of these I have none except such as are put into books (the Western Tourist etc.) and to oblige you I will take out a copy & send it to you for it will make no charge." Signed, "Yours truly, J.H. Colton." On blue paper, 15" x 10" folded to size given above into self- folding envelope. A most desirable collectable with a fine example of Colton's signature.
