This great bird's-eye plan shows the organization of the defenses of Valletta and the surrounding cities, forts and chateaux. These fortresses were built by the Knights Hospitaller after the siege of Malta by the Ottoman Turks in 1565. They evolved into the best fortifications of the 17th century and were the main base of operations for the Knights' fight against the Barbary pirates.
