This is a terrific example of an early American-produced copper engraved map in its first state from the first edition of Scott's United States Gazetteer. This example shows Wilmington, Trenton, Philadelphia, New York City and the location of the lighthouse at Sandy Hook, as well as thirteen counties. The maps published in Scott's Gazetteer are unusual due to their remarkable accuracy. They are some of the earliest renditions of the individual states, and are all presented in excellent detail with numerous place names, rivers and landmarks. A decorative title cartouche and simple, yet elegant compass rose further embellish this map.
