This fantastic map is dated 1857, but depicts Central Park, which opened in 1858, in its completed version. Street guides for New York and Brooklyn are contained in panels at left and bottom. The map is vividly colored by ward with fire districts and public buildings located. The railroads and ferry routes are well documented. The map is enclosed in an exquisite Victorian border, and includes several small vignettes of ships. At the upper right portion is an advertisement for "Tho's Chatterton & Co. Clothing" that replaces the word "Map" found on another version of Phelps' map. This map folds down to 2.8 x 5", and was separately issued to advertise Chatterton & Co. It is much scarcer than the other Phelps versions.

The map is printed on fine banknote paper with original hand coloring. A few spots and tiny fold intersection splits, a small hole in Hamilton Square, else very good.
