Robert Dudley was the first Englishman to produce a sea atlas, Dell Arcano del Mare (Secrets of the Sea). The atlas was only issued in two editions and the maps are rarely seen on the market. This beautiful example is crisply engraved in the sparse Florentine style with superb calligraphy throughout. This chart covers the South Atlantic from the Guinea coast of Africa to the Brazilian coast. A sailing ship, compass rose and title cartouche embellish the chart. Two folio sheets are joined to make up this large chart, as issued.
