1) Modern Atlas, Physical, Political and Statistical…, William C. Woodbridge, Hartford, copyright date 1843, but published circa 1846. An early school atlas with many of the maps focused on the United States. This complete atlas contains 19 copper-engraved maps, 5 of which are double-page, and 13 are hand-colored in full or outline. The Political Map of the United States shows the new state of Texas in its "stovepipe" configuration just after annexation by the United States. 4to (9.7 x 12"), original soft covers with cloth spine. Text and maps generally good with occasional light foxing and offsetting. Most pages are dog-eared and creased to varying degrees. Soft covers are worn from use and time. Spine and binding are also loose.
2) Mitchell's Ancient Atlas, Classical and Sacred…, Cowperthwait, Desilver, & Butler, Philadelphia, 1854. A wonderful geography describing the ancient world. The complete atlas has its title page, and an eleven-page index followed by twelve hand colored, copper engraved maps with Europe being the lone double-paged example. 4to (10 x 12.5"), hardbound in original brown paper covered boards with cloth spine. Text and maps generally good with light soil and a few spots of foxing. Covers are shelf worn and scuffed with some loss at the extremities. Binding is loose.
