These two books, the first in a series of six volumes largely considered to be an essential work referencing the history of cartographic refinement, are a terrific source of expert knowledge. Each one is extensively illustrated with color and black and white reproductions that show examples of each discussion in tremendous detail. Edited by J.B. Harley and David Woodward. Both are 8vo, hardbound in gray cloth with gilt titles on the spine printed within a field of red or blue, depending on the volume, with illustrated dust jackets in protective sleeves.
1) Volume I - Cartography in Prehistoric, Ancient, and Medieval Europe and the Mediterranean. This volume "presents a critical synthesis of mapping in Europe and the Mediterranean basin from its earliest prehistoric manifestations through the High Middle Ages."
2) Volume II, Book I - Cartography in the Traditional Islamic and South Asian Societies. "This volume focuses on mapping in non-Western cultures, an area of study historically overlooked by Western scholars. Extensive original research makes this the foremost source for defining, describing, and analyzing this vast and unexplored theater of cartographic history."
