Division 1 of this classic travel book of the Romantic period from drawings by W.H. Bartlett. With a handsome portrait of Sultan Abdul Medschid Chan on the frontis, and a lovely engraved Barbyses in the Valley of Sweet Waters scene on the title page. All 25 steel engraved plates have their original tissue guards intact. This example also includes a 12 page Introduction, 36 pages of descriptive text and 4 pages of advertisements for other publications from Virtue & Co. Original hardbound in red cloth with decorative gilt title on the spine. The covers are extravagantly embossed and feature gilt vignettes of a sultan on the front board, and an allegorical figure representing a river on the back cover. All edges gilt.

Contents generally very good with only occasional foxing. Covers lightly soiled with corners bumped. Spine has minor loss at the extremities only and the binding is sound.
