This uncommon edition is a composite of Ettling's six maps of the United States, originally published in "The Weekly Dispatch." The map has outline hand coloring, and covers the country from the Rocky Mountains eastward. The map shows several possible routes explored for the proposed Pacific Railroads, as well as the tracks of Fremont, Whiting, Connelly and others. Numerous forts and Indian tribes are located. The 24 segments fold into a 7.5 x 10" clamshell box covered in brown buckram with the map title, date and publisher printed on a label that is pasted down on front. Good topographical detail throughout. This example has been dissected and backed with new linen.
