This is the uncommon Tanner issue of this map; one of the few 19th century maps to show Tennessee alone. The map is inset with the regions surrounding both Nashville and Knoxville at the top, and the steamboat routes all the way to New Orleans are noted in a chart to the right. The Tanner edition of the Universal Atlas was published by Carey & Hart in 1844. Samuel Augustus Mitchell, and then Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. purchased the plates for their editions of the Universal Atlas, but it is the earlier Tanner editions that are much more sought after.
