Superb, decorative map of the continent dominated by a huge cartouche showing Christ on the cross with the natives of South America gathered at its base. The map is further embellished with galleons and numerous fanciful sea monsters. This is a very beautiful map and a graphic record of the spread of Christianity in the New World. A chart at the bottom notes missions, both temporary and permanent, located throughout the map. Heinrich Scherer, a mathematics professor and Jesuit, produced this series of maps of the Americas to emphasize the extent of Catholic influence in the New World.
