This map's cartography of the northwestern part of South America laid the foundation for many other cartographers. The map includes Panama and present day Columbia. It is finely engraved with mountains, rivers and forests and depicts numerous small villages. The strapwork title cartouche, scale of miles and compass rose make it a very attractive map. Gerritsz was cartographer to the Dutch East India Company and De Laet was the director of the Dutch West India Company. Most of Gerritsz' work was only done in manuscript and these maps, published by De Laet, are the only Gerritsz maps available to the collector today.
