This fine and uncommon plan illustrates London before and after the Great Fire. The extent of the damage and the proposed plans for rebuilding are shown below in an enlarged view. Due to the need to rebuild as quickly and economically as possible, it wasn't possible to create an utterly new city with a new grid system; rather, new houses were built mostly on the former street plan, though some roads were widened and some new streets were constructed.
