Maund was a pharmacist, botanist and bookseller who was most noted as the publisher of several botanical periodicals with beautifully colored plates. This group of delicate engravings is from one of his now scarce gardener's guidebooks. The plates are not merely pretty plates; they are presented in a scientific manner with a small portion of some images left uncolored so that the viewer could examine leaf and flower structures. This group includes the Acanthephippium bicolor orchid, Parrot's bill (Clianthus puniceus), Trillium rhomboideum, Anthocercis viscosa, Cream cups (Platystemon californicum, Paxtonia rosea, Crown of Thorns (Euphorbia splendens), Alstraemeria errembaultu, Thrysanotus proliferus, Scarlet monkeyflower (Mimulus rosea-cardinalis).
