This is the first condensed edition consisting of the original report's Introductory Letter, chapters 2, 6 and 7, and Plate II, Map of the Alluvial Region of the Mississippi Prepared to Accompany the Report of Capt. A.A. Humphreys and Lieut. H.L. Abbot, Corps of Top'l Engrs. USA…1861. (18 x 28.3"). Only 3500 copies were published for the U.S. House of Representatives. The report provides a thorough analysis of the concerns of seasonal flooding and navigation problems along this important river and served as an invaluable guide to the future development of river engineering in the United States. The map has attractive printed coloring, and covers the Mississippi River from the Ohio River to the delta and includes all of Louisiana and Arkansas. 214 pages. 8vo. Hardbound in original brown cloth with gilt title on front.

Map has a binding tear just entering map and repaired with cello tape on verso and some minor toning along edges. Text pages are a bit foxed. Binding is tight with covers a bit soiled and rubbed. Minor loss at corners and extremities of spine.
